Breast Screening

Women are invited for breast screening (mammogram) by letter every 3 years from age 50 to 71.

Breast screening is a check to make sure your breasts (boobs) are healthy.

Your breasts are made of small parts called cells.

A cancer happens when these cells grow the wrong way.

Breast cancer can make you very poorly and people can die from it.

Breast screening is a special picture test of your breasts called a mammogram.

It can find small lumps in your breasts that you can not see or feel which could be cancer.  

This means if cancer is found you can be treated early.

This could save your life!

Do you want to talk more about having breast screening? You can speak to your GP or practice nurse.

You can also speak to the learning disability nurses on 0115 8760138.

To help you have your breast screening you can ask for:

​

  • a visit before the test to meet the radiographer who does the picture test and see the equipment

 

  • a longer appointment

​

  • an appointment at a quiet time of day

​

  • someone you trust to be there with you

​

  • the test to be done at a hospital instead of the mobile unit

​

  • you can also call the screening hub on 0115 993 6649 if you need help to attend or have questions

If you forget to have your breast screening you can call the screening hub on 0115 993 6649 to book it

If you do not want breast screening please tell your GP.

They can fill out a form to stop you getting letters about the test.

You can change your mind at any time.

Tell your GP if you notice:

 

​

  • a lump in your breast

 

​

  • your breast looks different

​

​

  • you have pain in the breast

​​

​

  • or blood coming from the nipple

 

​

as these could be due to a problem with your breast.
